DID YOU KNOW…that not only is Antigua the location for many a celebrity get-away but has also been the host of some of the music industry’s most iconic videos. The music video ‘Rio’ by Duran Duran was shot over the course of three days in May 1982 on the island of Antigua. The yacht scenes were filmed on the bay at English Harbour, the beach scenes at Miller’s Beach, and the bit with the raft at Shirley Heights. Antigua’s stunning beaches certainly do represent the exotic and beautiful nature of ‘Rio’ within the song, and the soft, white beaches naturally lend themselves to the lyrics.
“We were just a bunch of guys from post-industrial Birmingham. Of course we noticed the recession. You couldn’t ignore the political climate at the time. When we played the Birmingham Odeon in either 1981 or ’82 there were riots on New Street. But I was 19 when the Rio album came out. You’re trying to make something good for yourself. Of course you’re aware of other things, but the party was definitely more on everybody’s mind.” – Nick Rhodes
